The high-stress IT world has taken another victim, as a 25-year-old Pune-based Hinjawadi IT Park engineer lost his life due to the crushing weight of mental health issues. On May 31, Abhilasha Bhausaheb Kothimbire, a young working professional of an IT company in Senapati Bapat Road, ended her life jumping from the 21st floor of a residential complex in Crown Green Society. This tragedy highlights the deepening mental health crisis among working professionals in the tech sector, where never-ending work pressure, career insecurity, and the ongoing necessity of upskill are leaving their indelible marks.

Pune | June 06, 2025: Abhilasha, who hailed from Ahilyanagar in Shrigonda taluka, used to visit often a friend’s house in Crown Green Society. Police identified her by her parked two-wheeler, and a post-mortem in Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri confirmed that she died due to the fall. An accidental death report was filed with investigations incriminating severe depression as the motivating force.
A further probe unearthed horrifying facts. Abhilasha’s roommate in a PG hostel spotted pale bloodstains in the bathroom walls at 5 am but brushed them aside. By 10 am, as Abhilasha remained untraceable and her phone was off, anxiety set in. A search of their common bedroom revealed spots of blood on personal belongings, such as a napkin, innerwear, and bedsheet, as well as a tearful letter stating her loss of will to live. Police suspect that prior to her lethal leap, Abhilasha could have tried to harm herself by cutting her wrist, and this is a possible explanation for the bloodstains. Her cell phone and bloodied personal items have been confiscated for investigation.
This tragedy highlights starkly the mental health issues that afflict the IT industry. The unrelenting work pace of the industry, in addition to personal issues, has resulted in numerous young professionals wrestling with depression and anxiety. The lack of foul play in Abhilasha’s situation reveals an internal struggle that went unseen until it was too late. Her case is a grim reminder of the need for mental health assistance in high-stress sectors such as IT.
While Pune grieves the loss of a brilliant young mind, this tragedy triggers a much-needed discussion on workplace well-being. Businesses and societies need to put in place mental health support systems, creating spaces where workers feel cared for and considered. Abhilasha’s passing is not only an individual loss but a wake-up call to make the silent epidemic that besets millions of professionals in the technology sector a non-issue, so no other person feels they have no other choice.
