A 62-year-old Mumbai man died by suicide after threats from a girl’s family over his son’s love affair. Police have filed an abetment case; investigation is ongoing.
Mumbai | July 11, 2025 – A shocking incident has come to light from Ghatkopar, Mumbai, where a father ended his life following harassment over his son’s romantic relationship. The 62-year-old man, Bhimrao Salve, died by suicide after allegedly being threatened and mentally harassed by the girl’s family. The matter has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about how family pressures around love relationships can spiral into tragedy.
The Pantnagar police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the girl’s father, cousin, and brother based on a complaint filed by Bhimrao’s daughter, Jaya Khairnar.
Bhimrao Salve lived with his wife Suman and son Santosh in Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Ghatkopar. A few days ago, Santosh entered into a romantic relationship with a girl from the same locality. When her family discovered this, they reacted violently — assaulting Santosh on July 5 and filing a molestation complaint against him at the police station.
Frightened by the police case, Santosh fled from home and went missing. In his absence, the girl’s family allegedly began threatening his parents — especially Bhimrao and Suman — demanding that they produce Santosh or face serious consequences.
Unable to handle the mental pressure and fearing for his family, Bhimrao reportedly took the extreme step of ending his life by hanging himself in his own home.
His daughter, Jaya, has now filed an official complaint, and the Pantnagar police are conducting further investigation.
This heartbreaking incident raises difficult questions: Are we, as a society, failing to create space for young people to make personal choices? And are we ignoring the emotional toll such conflicts take on families?
