Pune | May 24, 2025: In a sharp statement that may impact global manufacturing dynamics, former U.S. President Donald Trump has openly threatened Apple CEO Tim Cook, saying iPhones sold in the U.S. must be manufactured in the U.S. — not in India or elsewhere. Trump issued the warning via a post on Truth Social, stating that if Apple proceeds with producing iPhones in India, a minimum 25% tariff will be imposed on their U.S. sales.
Apple, which currently assembles one in every five iPhones in India, has been gradually expanding its footprint outside China, driven by geopolitical and economic concerns. The company reportedly aims to ramp up Indian production to 60% in the near future.
Trump, however, seems firm in his stance: “I have explained this to Tim Cook earlier. If Apple makes iPhones outside the U.S., they will face steep tariffs.”
While this isn’t Trump’s first tariff threat, the renewed pressure comes amid rising U.S.–China tensions and increased global scrutiny over supply chain dependencies.
Apple continues its efforts to diversify manufacturing, investing heavily in India to avoid overreliance on China. But Trump’s threat may throw a wrench into Apple’s globalization strategy and stir political debate ahead of the U.S. elections.
