Negligence by Mahavitaran claimed the lives of two farmers in Chikalthana. Furious villagers blocked Jalna Road for two hours, demanding action as officials allegedly ignored repeated warnings of danger.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | June 17, 2025 : A tragic incident in the Chikalthana area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has claimed the lives of two farmers, reportedly due to the negligence of the Mahavitaran electricity department. The deceased—uncle and nephew Kachru Janardan Dahihande and Balu alias Balaji Janardan Dahihande—were electrocuted by a live power line that had been lying dangerously in their field for over two weeks.
The accident sparked massive public outrage. Furious villagers staged a road blockade at Hanuman Chowk on Jalna Road, bringing traffic to a standstill for nearly two hours. The protest created a tense atmosphere in the region, prompting senior police officers and local leaders to rush to the spot. A heavy police presence was deployed to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
According to local sources, the power line had broken during a storm 15 days ago, and repeated complaints were made to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran). However, no action was taken, despite visible signs of danger such as dangling wires and leaning poles in several nearby fields.
On the day of the incident, Kachru and Balaji Dahihande had gone to the field for routine tillage work. Unaware of the live wire lying concealed in the soil, they came into contact with it and died instantly from the electric shock.
This horrifying event is not an isolated case. Ever since the onset of the monsoon season, multiple cases of mismanagement by Mahavitaran have been reported. Just two days prior, residents faced a prolonged 18-hour power outage in several areas of the city. Rural fields are reportedly dotted with sagging and exposed power lines—yet, Mahavitaran officials allegedly continue to neglect safety measures.
The protestors, demanding accountability, refused to disperse until they received a written assurance from the administration that strict action would be taken against the negligent officials. Only after this guarantee was provided did the villagers finally end their road blockade. The incident has reignited the debate around infrastructure negligence and rural safety, with citizens calling for urgent audits and permanent solutions before more lives are lost
