BJP sends renowned prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam to Rajya Sabha after his Lok Sabha defeat, recalling his fierce courtroom stance in high-profile cases, including a tense moment with Sanjay Dutt.
New Delhi | August 7, 2025: After losing in the Lok Sabha elections, veteran Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has been given a Rajya Sabha seat by the BJP, finally fulfilling his long-standing aspiration of becoming a Member of Parliament. Known for his razor-sharp arguments and high conviction rate, Nikam has been the government’s face in some of India’s most crucial criminal trials—from the 1993 Mumbai blasts to the Ajmal Kasab trial.
Nikam’s courtroom reputation is unmatched. He is widely credited for ensuring the harshest punishment for terrorists and other serious offenders through meticulous legal strategy and powerful courtroom delivery. One of the most talked-about cases remains that of the 1993 Mumbai blasts, where actor Sanjay Dutt was also an accused.
Dutt, accused of illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle as part of a consignment linked to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, faced trial in a special TADA court set up within Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai. As the case drew intense national and international media coverage, Nikam regularly briefed the press in multiple languages after each hearing.
However, one incident during the trial left a lasting impression on both the media and those close to the case. On a particular day, after court proceedings, Sanjay Dutt stepped out, drawing the entire media’s attention. Cameras and reporters swarmed around him, leaving no one at the usual press spot for Ujjwal Nikam. When Nikam came out and saw the media absent, he was visibly displeased. Though he later addressed the reporters, the moment left him upset.
At the next hearing, when Dutt arrived, Nikam called him aside and sternly warned, “Sanju, until I leave, you will not come out of the court. Understand?” Dutt, sensing the seriousness, simply replied, “Yes, sir. I will definitely not come.” Witnesses say Dutt was visibly shaken and sweating—a rare moment showing the fear and respect Nikam commanded.
Ultimately, the TADA court sentenced Sanjay Dutt to six years in prison, labeling him a terrorist under the TADA Act. Though the Supreme Court later reduced his sentence to five years, Dutt served his time in Pune’s Yerwada Jail before being released.
Now stepping into the Parliament, Ujjwal Nikam carries with him not just his legacy as a prosecutor but also countless courtroom stories that have shaped India’s legal history.
