Pune | May 21, 2025: Unseasonal rains over the past two days have devastated onion and vegetable crops in Daund tehsil, hitting major onion-producing villages like Rahu, Pimpalgaon, Delwadi, Khutbav, and Nangaon. Stored onions in these regions—known as the onion depots of Daund—have been drenched, dealing a massive blow to farmers who had preserved them for sale.
Farmers who expected to sell their harvests in the near future are now dealing with the spoiling of their crops. The sudden increase in moisture has adversely affected the stored onions, this has led to financial hardships for growers. Suffering from financial hardships, many are now inundating the markets with their remaining inventory. The rise in supply has led to a noteble decrease in the price of onions.
Currently, onion prices range between ₹3 to ₹13 per kg, depending on quality. Most farmers are receiving only ₹6 to ₹7 per kg—far below the required ₹15 to ₹20 per kg needed to recover their investment. With the cost of cultivation ranging from ₹80,000 to ₹1,00,000 per acre and an average yield of 150–160 bags, farmers are facing severe financial losses.
The plight of onion farmers in Daund reflects a deeper crisis in our agricultural system—where unseasonal weather, lack of storage infrastructure, and volatile market prices leave farmers vulnerable and helpless. Unless urgent steps are taken by the government to provide compensation, stabilize prices, and ensure reliable storage and procurement support, the financial strain on these farmers may deepen. In the face of climate uncertainties, safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods must be treated as a national priority—not just seasonal concern.
