Pune | June 4, 2025: Indian badminton witnessed a mix of triumph and disappointment on Tuesday at the ongoing tournament in Jakarta. P. V. Sindhu and the formidable men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty moved ahead with impressive victories, but hopes in men’s singles were dashed as Lakshya Sen and H. S. Prannoy exited in the first round.
In a thrilling contest, Sindhu battled past Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a tight three-game match. After clinching the opening game 22-20, she lost momentum in the second, going down 21-23. However, she bounced back with precision and energy in the decider, winning it 21-15 and wrapping up the match in 1 hour and 19 minutes. She will now take on Thailand’s sixth seed Pornpawi Chochuwong in the next round. On the other hand, Lakshya Sen couldn’t maintain consistency in his face-off with world No. 2 Shi Yuqi of China. Sen was outplayed 21-11 in the first game but responded strongly with a 22-20 win in the second.

The deciding set, however, slipped away 21-15, handing Yuqi the victory after a 65-minute battle. H. S. Prannoy too had a tough outing, succumbing to Indonesia’s young shuttler Alwi Farhan, who dominated with a straight-games win, 21-17, 21-18, knocking Prannoy out of the race early. In doubles action, Satwik and Chirag lived up to expectations, securing their place in the second round with a steady and confident display. There was heartbreak in women’s singles as well, with Malvika Bansod forced to retire due to injury. She had won the first game 21-16 and was leading 16-15 in the second against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani when she slipped on court, injuring her knee and ending her campaign abruptly. After her win, Sindhu shared that while beating Okuhara was satisfying, she remains focused on improving her technique and staying injury-free in the coming matches.
