As women observe Vat Pournima, men in Sambhajinagar mark Peepal Pournima, praying not to get the same wife again, protesting misuse of laws and advocating attention to men’s marital struggles.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | June 11, 2025: As women across Maharashtra fast and perform rituals under the banyan tree on Vat Pournima for the long life and loyalty of their husbands, a contrasting and symbolic tradition called Peepal Pournima is quietly gaining attention.
While Vat Pournima celebrates the sacred bond of marriage and the desire for the same husband in every birth, a group of men in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar marked the day with a different prayer — to not have the same wife again in the next birth.
Initiated by the Wife Victims’ sanghatana , men gathered and circumambulated the Peepal tree seven times, praying to be free from wives who they allege misuse laws, cause mental distress, and harass husbands and in-laws. According to the organization, Peepal Pournima has been observed for the past five years as a symbolic protest, aiming to highlight the overlooked struggles of men facing legal and emotional harassment in marriages.
The group asserts that while laws have rightly been enacted to protect women, some individuals misuse these protections, leading to the mental, emotional, and financial ruin of men and their families. They stress that not all men are perpetrators — and that in some cases, they are victims.
The movement is not against women’s rights, organizers clarified, but rather seeks to create balance and encourage reforms that prevent misuse of protective laws. They also demand a shift in societal mentality — one that recognizes that men, too, can be vulnerable in marital relationships.
As Vat Pournima continues to symbolize eternal companionship, Peepal Pournima has opened a new conversation — about fairness, accountability, and the need to hear all sides in the evolving landscape of marital dynamics.
