‘Village to School’ Bus Service in Sangli Gets Safer with Appointment of 171 Female Conductors

Sangli

To improve rural girls’ safety, ST Corporation appoints 171 women conductors in Sangli’s school bus service. Initiatives like free passes and ‘Police Didi’ ensure secure, uninterrupted education.

Mumbai | August 7, 2025: In a significant step to ensure the safety and uninterrupted education of rural schoolgirls, the Maharashtra State Transport (ST) Corporation has strengthened the ‘Village to School’ bus service by appointing female conductors. This initiative is part of the state’s growing concern for girls’ safety following recent incidents involving harassment in public transport areas.

As per the directive of the General Manager, 171 female conductors have been assigned across all ST depots in Sangli district, most of whom are now deployed on school bus routes. This has been a welcome change, especially for girls commuting from villages to towns for education.

The decision comes amidst growing worries about the harassment of school and college girls at bus stands and in buses. The presence of female conductors is instilling confidence among students and providing much-needed relief to their parents.

The ‘Village to School’ bus service has been operational since 2012 and is currently benefiting thousands of students from the ten ST depots in the district. Additionally, under the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar scheme, free bus passes are provided to girls studying up to class 12.

In another safety-focused initiative, the ‘Police Kaka/Police Didi’ program has also been introduced, under which police officers occasionally travel on buses, ensuring girls’ safety and discouraging miscreants.
