Pune| May 28, 2025 : In a significant step toward ethical wildlife management, Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj, conducted the lawful destruction of naturally shed antlers of deer species, including sambar, chital, and bhekar. A total of 176 horns, collected over time, were safely disposed of using gas-based burners as per the Wildlife Disposal of Wild Animal Article Rules, 2023.
The project, carried out under the oversight of Mr. Tushar Chavan, the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Pune Region), occurred at the zoo site at 11 AM. The Pune Municipal Corporation commenced the operation, which took place with key forest and civic officials in attendance, including Assistant Conservator Mr. Mangesh Tate, Forest Range Officer Mr. Suresh Varak, Zoo Director Dr. Rajkumar Jadhav, and Honorary Wildlife Warden Mr. Aditya Paranjpe.

The horns were destroyed following a strict protocol involving panchnama documentation and video recording, ensuring full transparency. Officials emphasized that proper disposal prevents misuse of animal remains and upholds environmental ethics.
The destruction was carried out by a committee constituted by the Forest Department, with legal compliance as its backbone. “This is not just a regulatory requirement, but a gesture of respect toward our wildlife,” said Deputy Conservator Tushar Chavan. He stressed the importance of implementing such procedures across all zoological parks regularly.
This responsible approach safeguards wildlife dignity, curbs illegal trade, and promotes legal clarity in wildlife conservation efforts.
