Pune | April 13, 2025: A violent altercation at a Kalyani Nagar pub in the early hours of April 11, involving the sons of two political figures, has stirred serious concerns about the impartiality of Yerwada Police. Though the incident led to the sealing of the pub under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, no FIR has been lodged — despite CCTV footage, a control room call, and medical memos issued to both parties.
According to Yerwada Police, the clash occurred around 1:00 a.m. at Hotel Unicorn House, situated within the Celebram IT Park. As per sources, the son of a former corporator from Yerwada was allegedly denied service, following which his group began vandalizing the property. In retaliation, the pub staff reportedly assaulted him. The situation further escalated when the son of a sitting MLA from Pimpri-Chinchwad arrived at the scene to mediate the conflict.
While the CCTV footage has been submitted to the police by the pub owner, and medical memos were officially issued to both groups — standard precursors to legal proceedings — Yerwada Police have yet to register a First Information Report (FIR).
Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Shelke, in charge of Yerwada Police Station, confirmed that the premises were sealed under Section 142(2) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949. However, he has not responded to calls or media queries regarding why no FIR has been filed.
Sources further reveal that Unicorn Club has a problematic track record, with two criminal cases and ten ‘khatla’ (minor) complaints already filed against it. This is not the first time the establishment has landed in trouble. On December 31, 2024, Yerwada Police had taken action against Hotel Unicorn House and Elrow pub for hosting unauthorized New Year’s parties and operating beyond permissible hours. This was in direct violation of Commissioner Amitesh Kumar’s mandate requiring pubs and rooftop establishments to shut in time.
Despite this checkered history, the current silence on filing an FIR has raised eyebrows. Why is Yerwada Police ignoring CCTV evidence and control room alerts? Why is there no legal action despite the issuance of medical memos — which serve as the legal basis for registering an FIR?
Critics are now questioning whether Yerwada Police have succumbed to political pressure, especially when the individuals involved belong to politically connected families. Many are also wondering whether this inaction aligns with the vision and mission of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who has worked diligently toward building a safer, more law-abiding city, including organizing parades of hardened criminals at the Police Commissionerate.
As pressure mounts from the public and media, clarity is awaited from senior police officials. Meanwhile, the people of Pune are left asking — Is justice selectively delayed when political power is involved?
