June 17, 2025 | Mumbai : The first day of school brought fear instead of joy for 700 children studying at a municipal school on Old Nagardas Road in Andheri East. These students have been forced to study inside a 60-year-old dilapidated building, where cracks on the walls and collapsing slabs pose a real threat to their safety.
Despite repeated complaints by anxious parents, the education department of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has failed to take action—raising serious concerns about the safety of these children.
Several parts of the school building show clear signs of structural failure.
- Cracks run through walls.
- Slabs are weakened, with some already collapsed.
- Classrooms lack basic safety.
Parents say the school has become a ticking time bomb. “We’ve informed the authorities multiple times, but no serious steps have been taken. We are afraid to send our children here every day,” a parent shared.

Local MLA Murji Patel visited the school today and expressed strong disappointment with the inaction of the civic body’s education department. “700 children are sitting here in danger. I visited this school two days ago. Parents are terrified. The BMC’s education department is asleep,” said Murji Patel.
He has demanded a structural audit of the building and has vowed to take the issue to higher authorities. “I will meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. This issue cannot be ignored,” he added.

MLA Patel has assured parents that he will raise the matter in the upcoming assembly session. He warned that if immediate repairs or reconstruction is not planned, he would escalate the issue politically and legally.
“We cannot afford to wait for a tragedy to act,” he said bluntly.
Despite the gravity of the issue, no official response has come from the BMC’s education department so far. The building continues to be in use—with children attending classes inside a structure that could collapse at any time.
