Ahead of BMC elections, Shinde faction claims 123 former corporators have joined, including 76 from Uddhav’s camp. With BJP eyeing 150+ seats, the fight for Mumbai intensifies dramatically.
Mumbai | August 1, 2025: As the countdown begins for the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, political activity has gained serious momentum—especially around the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which are expected to be among the most fiercely contested battles. The BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) have begun aggressive preparations to challenge Uddhav Thackeray’s hold over Mumbai, aiming to make deep inroads into what has traditionally been his stronghold.
The Shinde-led Shiv Sena, currently sharing power in the state, has taken substantial steps to strengthen its grip over Mumbai. According to internal claims, the faction has managed to bring 123 former corporators from various political parties into its fold over the past three years. Among them, 76 are from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, while the rest are former members of Congress, NCP, MNS, and the Samajwadi Party—excluding the BJP.
The Shinde group has been systematically organizing outreach programs and political activities across Mumbai, signaling that it is no longer limiting its influence to Thane but is making a decisive push into Mumbai’s civic politics. This growing wave of defections—from corporators across party lines—has bolstered the faction’s confidence as it prepares to field candidates for all 227 wards.
Out of the 76 ex-corporators from Uddhav’s camp who have joined the Shinde group, the largest batch—44 corporators—belonged to the 2017–2022 term. Another 33 are from the 2012–2017 term, making it evident that the Shinde camp has been steadily consolidating local-level support. The group claims that new members are joining every fortnight, and more will switch over before the election is officially announced.
The BJP, meanwhile, is said to be preparing to contest over 150 seats, indicating its ambition to lead the BMC, possibly in alliance with the Shinde faction. However, the seat-sharing dynamics between BJP and the Shinde-led Sena remain a key point of political speculation.
This multi-cornered contest is expected to redraw political lines in Mumbai’s civic governance. As the electoral picture sharpens, all eyes will be on how Uddhav Thackeray counters this rising tide of defections and whether the Shinde-BJP alliance can dethrone him from one of his most crucial bastions.
