Three Dalit girls allege illegal detention and casteist abuse by Pune police. Despite protests and political support, FIR under Atrocities Act denied. Tension mounts as protests continue into the night.
Pune | August 4, 2025: Allegations of unlawful detention and caste-based abuse by police have sparked intense protests in Pune, as three Dalit girls accused investigating officers of harassing them without cause during the probe of a missing girl case from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The incident has provoked outrage from political leaders and social activists, with a protest that lasted till 3 a.m. at the Pune Police Commissionerate.
The girls claimed they were detained without a warrant and verbally abused with casteist slurs during questioning by Kothrud Police. Despite repeated pleas, police authorities refused to file a case under the SC/ST Atrocities Act against the concerned officers. In protest, the girls and their supporters, including MLA Rohit Pawar and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi leader Sujat Ambedkar, continued their demonstration through the night.
Protest Intensifies, Police Refuse FIR
At around 3 a.m., tensions flared further when the police handed the victims a rejection letter, declining to register the complaint. Enraged, the girls tore the letter in front of senior officials, expressing strong dissent. The protest had been building over two days, with numerous social workers and party members, including Anjali Ambedkar and Prashant Jagtap, present at the scene.
MLA Rohit Pawar, who stayed with the protestors overnight, slammed the administration, saying, “The system was not ready to listen. Despite strong public opinion and our presence, the complaint wasn’t accepted. We had to settle for a written statement from the police.”
He added, “If the police system treats ordinary citizens like this, we will not remain silent. We hope this wakes up the sleeping Home Minister.”
Political Pressure Mounts
The issue has triggered sharp reactions across political and social groups. Members of Congress, NCP, and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi joined hands demanding justice. With no FIR yet registered and public anger rising, there are fears that the situation may escalate further if authorities continue to delay legal action.
