Dengue claims its first victim in Kalyan; 35 cases reported. MNS demands ₹50 lakh for the victim’s family and protests against KDMC, warning of agitation if compensation is denied.
Kalyan | July 10, 2025: Dengue has begun to spread in Kalyan, with the first reported death caused by the mosquito-borne disease. Vilas Mhatre, a young resident of Betturkarpada in Kalyan West, succumbed to dengue, sparking public outrage and political protests. So far, 35 dengue cases have been detected within the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) limits, and dengue larvae have been found in water containers and drums around 350 homes.
Following Mhatre’s death, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers staged a symbolic protest at the KDMC headquarters by breaking coconuts, praying for an end to the suffering of citizens and urging the administration to take responsibility. MNS has demanded ₹50 lakh in compensation for Mhatre’s grieving family, stating he was the sole breadwinner. If the demand is not met, MNS has threatened stronger agitation against the Municipal Corporation.
Additional Commissioner Harshal Gaikwad has stated that all preventive measures are being implemented, and citizens are urged to stay alert and eliminate stagnant water sources to curb the mosquito population.
