Pune | June 13, 2025: A 65-year-old woman who was swept away in an overflowing roadside drain during heavy rains near Fursungi on Monday evening has been found dead. Her body was recovered from the Mutha River on Friday afternoon ,ending an intense search operation.
The deceased, Shobha Manohar Mahimane, a resident of Darshan Park, Fursungi, had returned from a journey between Kolhapur and Pune. After disembarking near a bridge on the Bengaluru Highway, she attempted to cross the road in heavy rain to catch an auto-rickshaw. She tragically slipped into a waterlogged roadside drain that had turned into a forceful stream due to the monsoon downpour.
Eyewitnesses promptly alerted emergency services. Rescue teams, including fire brigade personnel, recovered one of her slippers near the incident site, helping trace her final movement.
Despite overnight efforts, she remained missing until her body was found in the Mutha River, several kilometers downstream. Officials cited fast currents and reduced visibility as major challenges in the search operation.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid walking near open drains and culverts during heavy rains. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for improved urban drainage systems and heightened public safety awareness during the monsoon.
