Pune |May 14, 2025: Gangster Gajanan alias Gaja Marane, no stranger to controversy, has once again grabbed headlines — not for a new crime, but for a mutton party. And what’s worse? It happened during a police-escorted transfer from Yerawada Jail to Sangli Jail.The gangster, currently behind bars under MCOCA charges, allegedly stopped at a roadside dhaba with full police escort and casually enjoyed a meal with his followers. This unexpected break during a high-security transfer has raised serious questions about police complicity and VIP treatment of gangsters.
Once the incident came to light, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar swung into action. Taking the issue seriously, he suspended four police personnel, including an Assistant Inspector, and launched an internal probe. The Commissioner didn’t mince words, stating that such lapses would not be tolerated and accountability would be enforced.
But that’s not all, In a move to clamp down harder on Marane, police have now decided to revive a pending charge sheet from 2021. The case relates to a massive rally and show of strength held by Marane after his release from Taloja Jail, for which an FIR was filed at Warje Malwadi Police Station. That charge sheet, which had been gathering dust, will now be filed in court.
While Marane was being transferred in relation to another assault case reported in Kothrud, where he and his gang allegedly thrashed a young person, this whole drama played out. The case involves MCOCA accusations, and police had scheduled his movement to Sangli Jail in line with more vigilance.
