Pune | 07 June,2025: In a landmark judgment, the Sessions Court in Mumbai has significantly increased the compensation awarded to a domestic violence victim — from ₹1 lakh to a staggering ₹1 crore — providing long-awaited relief to the woman after enduring two decades of abuse.
The victim, who suffered both physical and mental harassment at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law, had initially been granted ₹5 lakh compensation by the Magistrate’s Court. However, during appeals, it came to light that the husband is a billionaire and had falsely claimed financial distress to avoid paying higher compensation.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Ansari, while delivering the verdict, noted that the victim’s suffering over 20 years was immeasurable. The court stated it was impossible to fully compensate for the trauma inflicted, but ordered a more just amount of ₹1 crore considering the husband’s true financial standing.
Court records revealed that while the victim struggled, her husband had purchased property worth ₹1 crore in 2012 — contradicting his claims of financial hardship. The court criticized his attempt to mislead and emphasized that compensation should reflect both the gravity of the abuse and the abuser’s capacity to pay.
This decision is being hailed as a major victory for victims of domestic violence, reinforcing that the justice system will hold wealthy perpetrators accountable, regardless of their status.
