A troubling situation has emerged in Pune’s educational institutions as the Zilla Parishad struggles to address a growing crisis of teacher absenteeism. The mass exodus of educators, driven by unpaid salaries and administrative challenges, has disrupted schooling for thousands of students, raising serious concerns about the state of education in the district.

Pune | June 4, 2025: In Pune, the Zilla Parishad oversees 3,600 schools, employing around 18,000 teachers to educate over 3.5 lakh students. However, a staggering 108 teachers have resigned in the past 12 months, citing delayed salary payments and lack of support. Many of these educators have not received their wages for months, with some waiting up to a year. This financial strain has forced teachers to seek alternative employment, leaving schools understaffed and students without proper guidance. The issue is particularly acute in rural areas, where schools are already grappling with limited resources.
The impact on students has been severe, with many unable to complete their syllabus due to the shortage of teachers. Subjects like mathematics and science, which require specialized educators, are the hardest hit. In some schools, a single teacher is managing multiple classes, leading to overcrowded classrooms and compromised learning. Parents are increasingly worried about their children’s academic progress, with some students forced to rely on private tuitions to bridge the gap. The lack of consistent education has also taken a toll on students’ morale, with many losing interest in studies.
Administrative inefficiencies have compounded the problem. The Zilla Parishad has struggled to fill vacant teaching positions, with bureaucratic delays slowing down the recruitment process. Additionally, the transfer of 86 teachers to other districts has further strained the system, leaving schools in Pune short-staffed. The education department has also failed to address the root cause of salary delays, which stem from budget allocation issues and mismanagement. This has led to growing frustration among teachers, who feel neglected by the authorities.
The crisis has broader implications for the education system in Pune. With 86% of students in Zilla Parishad schools coming from underprivileged backgrounds, the lack of quality education threatens to widen the socio-economic gap. Many of these children rely on government schools for their only chance at upward mobility, making the current situation particularly alarming. Education experts have warned that if the issue is not addressed urgently, it could lead to a significant drop in literacy rates and academic performance in the region.
The Zilla Parishad is now under pressure to take immediate action. There are calls for streamlining salary disbursements, expediting teacher recruitment, and providing better support to educators. As the academic year progresses, the focus remains on ensuring that students are not further disadvantaged by this crisis, with hopes that the education system can be restored to stability.
