Pune | May 24, 2025: Following global concerns, central government cracks down; five arrested, two absconded, significant tech seizure made.
Operating on the 9th floor of Pride Icon building in Kharadi, a bogus contact center among one of the largest operations in Pune was discovered on Union Home Ministry directives and resulted in 123 persons being detained. International complaints exposing the center’s fraud of foreign nationals under threat with fictitious “digital arrests” led to the takedown.
The raid was carried out by a joint team of the Pune Cyber Police, Crime Branch, and local police. During the action, authorities seized 41 mobile phones and 62 laptops used in the fraudulent operations. So far, five people have been arrested, including mastermind Karan Shekhawat, while two others are on the run.
The center had been active for the past three months, employing over 100 individuals, many of whom are being thoroughly investigated. The operation reportedly targeted victims from outside India, falsely claiming legal trouble or digital crimes to extort money under the pretense of avoiding arrest. Authorities are now probing possible links to other fake call centers and associates from Maharashtra and Gujarat. A detailed investigation is underway to track the extent of the fraud and all those involved.
