Residents of Viman Nagar and Wadgaon Sheri face severe water shortages, relying on costly private tankers as municipal supply falters. Despite sufficient water in Bhama Askhed dam, poor management and technical issues disrupt equitable distribution.
Pune| 30 July, 2025: In Pune’s eastern neighborhoods of Viman Nagar and Wadgaon Sheri, residents are grappling with a frustrating water crisis that has disrupted daily life. Despite the Bhama Askhed dam holding 82% of its storage capacity, these areas have faced erratic and inadequate water supply, leaving families and housing societies dependent on expensive private tankers. The situation has sparked anger and highlighted stark disparities in water access across the city, pushing communities to the brink of protest.
Over the past week, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has drastically reduced water supply from the usual 2.5–3 hours to a mere 45 minutes, often with low pressure that barely meets basic needs. On Sunday, the supply dwindled to nearly nothing, forcing many housing societies to order up to 12–15 tankers daily to keep up with demand. This sudden shift has strained budgets, as the cost of private tankers adds a heavy financial burden to residents who were previously managing without them.
The disruptions continued into Monday, with water supply delayed by over an hour and lasting less than 45 minutes. Tuesday brought little relief, as many societies received no water until the evening. Residents report poor communication from PMC staff, leaving them in the dark about when or if supply will resume. Some point to intermittent power failures at the Bhama Askhed pumping station as a key issue, but they argue that technical glitches alone cannot justify days of disruption when water reserves are plentiful.
The frustration is palpable, with residents questioning why some Pune neighborhoods enjoy consistent, round-the-clock water access while others struggle. In Wadgaon Sheri, community groups have been flooded with distress calls from neighboring societies, reflecting a shared sense of neglect. Many believe the root cause lies not in a lack of water but in poor planning and mismanagement by the PMC. The failure to equitably distribute water from well-stocked reservoirs has left families feeling overlooked and undervalued.
As the crisis persists, residents are growing increasingly vocal. Some are organizing to demand accountability and a reliable water supply for all parts of Pune. The situation underscores the need for better infrastructure, improved communication, and proactive management to prevent such disruptions. For now, the people of Viman Nagar and Wadgaon Sheri are left navigating daily challenges, hoping for a resolution that restores their access to one of life’s most basic necessities—water.
