The sacred Wari horses from Karnataka bowed before Dagdusheth Ganapati in Pune, deeply moving devotees. This unique tradition blends devotion, discipline, and spirituality during the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage to Alandi.
Pune | June 18: Amidst chants of “Gyanoba Mauli Tukaram” and “Ganapati Bappa Morya”, a heartwarming and rare sight unfolded at the Srimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple—two revered horses from the Ashadhi Wari Palanquin Ceremony bowed before Lord Ganesha, showcasing a beautiful blend of discipline and devotion.

These horses, belonging to the Shitole Sarkar family of Ankali, Belgaum (Karnataka), travel nearly 300 kilometers on foot each year as part of the sacred tradition of the Ashadhi Wari. Continuing their legacy, they once again graced Pune this year, drawing large crowds of amazed devotees.
A Devotional Salute
What made this visit extraordinary was the scene inside the temple’s assembly hall, where the horses were allowed to enter the premises and bow before the idol of Dagdusheth Ganapati. With folded heads and composed behavior, they paid what many called a “silent yet powerful tribute” to Bappa.
“This tradition has been going on for years,” said Shitole Sarkar. “Earlier, the horses were taken only till the temple gate. But now, their entry inside the hall has added a spiritual depth to the Wari for us and the devotees.”

An Emotional Moment for Devotees
For Punekars who may not be able to walk the Wari route to Alandi or Pandharpur, this visit becomes a symbolic moment of connection with the holy pilgrimage. Many were moved to tears watching the horses bow in sync with aartis and chants, calling it a “moment of divine alignment.”
After offering their salutations at the temple, the horses resumed their journey towards Alandi, continuing the spiritual rhythm of Wari that bridges centuries of faith, tradition, and devotion.
