Pune, 31 May 2025 – The iconic Sinhagad Fort, a popular destination for trekkers and history enthusiasts, has been temporarily closed for public access for the next three days, from 31 May to 2 June 2025. This decision has been taken due to the ongoing encroachment removal drive being carried out by the Pune Forest Department.
The fort, which draws hundreds of visitors daily, is currently undergoing a manual removal of illegally constructed permanent RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) structures. Officials stated that due to the fort’s narrow and rugged terrain, it is not feasible to use heavy machinery such as JCBs. As a result, the process is taking longer than initially estimated.

To ensure the safety of the public and the workers involved in the process, access to all tourist routes—including the popular trekking footpaths—has been restricted. The administration has appealed to citizens and tourists to cooperate during this temporary closure.
Sub-Conservator of Forests from the Pune Forest Department emphasized that the work is progressing with diligence and that every effort is being made to restore the fort area to its original state. Authorities remain optimistic that the operation will be successful and the fort will reopen soon.
Tourists are requested to plan accordingly and stay updated through official announcements.
