A 66-year-old worker lost his life in a heartbreaking accident while trimming trees in a Pune housing society. The incident highlights the critical need for safety measures in such tasks.
Pune | August 5, 2025: In a devastating incident in Pune’s Baner area, Lahu Gulab Kshirsagar, a 66-year-old labourer, met with a fatal accident while cutting tree branches in Ruturang Park, a residential society. The tragedy unfolded in the late afternoon when Lahu, a resident of Pimple Nilakh’s Ingwale Chowk, fell from a tree during a routine maintenance task. Despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital, he succumbed to his severe injuries.
Lahu’s son, Amol, filed a complaint with the Baner Police, pointing to negligence by those responsible for the task. The police have since taken action against the contractor, Ramesh Vaman Londhe, as well as the society’s chairman, Shrikrishna Saraf, and secretary, Shrikrishna Bidve. The complaint alleges that the absence of safety equipment and precautions directly led to the tragic fall. No harnesses, helmets, or other protective gear were provided to Lahu, leaving him vulnerable while working at a height.
The tree-trimming work had been outsourced to Londhe by the society’s management, a common practice in residential complexes to maintain greenery. However, the lack of oversight and safety protocols turned a routine job into a fatal incident. The police investigation, led by Assistant Police Inspector Thite, is now examining whether the society and contractor adhered to municipal regulations. In Pune, trimming trees requires prior approval from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards. Authorities are verifying if such permissions were obtained, and further action will depend on the findings.
This heartbreaking loss has left Lahu’s family and community in grief, raising questions about accountability in outsourced maintenance work. Housing societies often rely on contractors for tasks like tree trimming, but this incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of safety standards. Workers like Lahu, who perform physically demanding and risky jobs, deserve proper protection to prevent such tragedies.
The investigation is ongoing, with Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant having visited the site to assess the circumstances.
