A 24-year-old tribal youth was brutally beaten to death with sticks and stones by five unidentified assailants in Panshet. The police are investigating CCTV footage to trace the culprits.
Panshet, Pune | June 17, 2025: A brutal murder in the tourist-heavy Panshet region of Pune has sent shockwaves through the local community, especially the tribal Katkari community, who are mourning the tragic death of Rohidas Kaluram Katkar, a 24-year-old resident of Kadve village in Rajgad taluka.
The incident occurred on Sunday night around 8 PM, right in front of Nandabai Kumbhar’s hotel, a public spot frequented by locals and tourists alike. Rohidas, along with his acquaintance Vijay Pandurang Jadhav, was standing outside the hotel when five unidentified youths aged 20–25 arrived on motorcycles. Without warning, the group attacked the duo with punches, kicks, and stones.
According to police reports, one attacker smashed a large stone onto Rohidas’s chest, causing him to die on the spot. Vijay Jadhav also sustained injuries in the sudden attack. Witnesses reported that the assailants fled the scene on bikes immediately after the assault.
The entire Varasgaon–Panshet area has been left tense and fearful, with the tribal community demanding justice. The motive for the murder remains unclear, and no personal enmity has been reported so far, posing a significant challenge for investigators.
Following a complaint lodged by Avinash Katkar, the brother of the deceased, Velhe police have filed a murder case under relevant sections. Police Sub-Inspector Amit Deshmukh is leading the investigation under the guidance of API Nitin Khamgan, with assistance from Panshet Police Station staff including Akash Patil, Yuvraj Somvanshi, and Gyandeep Dhiwar.
The police are now reviewing CCTV footage from Panshet market, settlements, and nearby Pune-Panshet road to identify and trace the assailants. The attackers’ two-wheeler route is being examined as a crucial lead.
