Due to heavy monsoon risks and landslide danger, Varandha Ghat will remain closed to all vehicles until September 30, 2025, as per Raigad Collector’s order. Alternative routes have been suggested.
Raigad | June 21: Travelers using Varandha Ghat, a key shortcut between Konkan and Pune, will now have to take alternative routes as the Raigad District Administration has announced a complete closure of the ghat for vehicular traffic until September 30, 2025. This seasonal restriction comes amid warnings of heavy rainfall during the monsoon and the increased risk of landslides, which have been a recurring danger in this treacherous mountain pass.
Known for its picturesque but perilous terrain, Varandha Ghat offers a quicker route to Pune but is notorious for its narrow roads, sharp turns, and blind curves, making it especially risky during the monsoon. With weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and considering the safety of commuters, District Collector Kishan Javale has issued orders to temporarily shut the ghat.
The decision was made after a formal request from the Executive Engineer of the National Highways Department, Pen division, and following a thorough review by the district administration. The move is aimed at preventing accidents and fatalities during this high-alert weather period.
For those planning to travel during the monsoon, alternative routes have been recommended. Travelers heading to Pune should use the route:
Rajewadi Phata – Mahad – Mangaon – Nizampur – Tamhini Ghat – Mulshi – Pirangut – Pune.
For Kolhapur-bound traffic, the suggested route is:
Rajewadi Phata – Poladpur – Khed – Chiplun – Patan – Karad – Kolhapur.
Given the ghat’s history of monsoon-triggered landslides and road collapses, this seasonal closure is not new, but authorities have stressed that public cooperation is essential to ensure safety. Varandha Ghat is expected to reopen for traffic in October 2025, once the risk subsides.
