Despite declining rain, Warna River continues to flood farmland due to dam discharge. 47 lakes in Shirala taluka are full, while farmers suffer crop damage from ongoing submergence.

Shirala | August 1, 2025: Even though rainfall intensity has slightly reduced in the catchment areas of Warna Dam, including Shirala taluka, the Warna River continues to overflow due to ongoing heavy water discharge from the dam. The river is now flowing in two directions, resulting in flooding of agricultural land along its banks.

Heavy dam discharge despite moderate rainfall

In the past 24 hours, rainfall recorded across the region includes 49 mm in Patharpunj, 46 mm in Nivale, 20 mm in Dhangarwada, and 14 mm in Chandoli. Notably, Patharpunj has surpassed the 4000 mm rainfall mark for the season. Chandoli dam area alone received 16 mm of rainfall till 8 am today.

Despite reduced rainfall, 9690 cusecs of water is flowing into Warna dam, while 10620 cusecs is being discharged — 8630 cusecs via curved gates and 1630 cusecs from the power house. The dam’s current storage is 28.61 TMC, with a water level of 620.90 meters.

As a result, crops on farmlands near the Warna riverbanks have remained submerged for the last five days, causing severe losses to farmers in the area.

47 percolation lakes at full capacity

According to Sub-Divisional Water Conservation Officer Praveen Teli, 47 out of 49 percolation lakes in Shirala taluka are filled to capacity. Repair work is ongoing on the Karmale No. 1 and Pachumbri lakes, which currently hold 50–55% capacity. In total, the 47 full lakes account for 230.16 million cubic feet of water storage.
