128 Prisoners Released on Bail During COVID-19 Pandemic Remain at Large in Amravati
128 prisoners released on bail during the COVID-19 pandemic from Amravati Jail have not returned, prompting authorities to appeal for their apprehension.
In a significant development, 128 prisoners who were released on bail during the COVID-19 pandemic from Amravati District Jail have failed to return, leading the jail authorities to appeal to the police to bring them back.
During the initial phase of the pandemic in March 2020, the Maharashtra government ordered the temporary release of certain prisoners to prevent overcrowding in jails and mitigate the spread of the virus. As part of this initiative, several undertrial prisoners were granted bail and allowed to return home. However, with the situation improving and restrictions easing, the state government directed that these prisoners return to complete their sentences.
While many of the released prisoners complied with the directive and returned to jail, 128 individuals from Amravati District Jail have not reported back. In response, the jail administration has compiled a list of these absconding prisoners and submitted it to the city police commissioner, urging them to locate and apprehend the individuals. The authorities are now coordinating efforts to track down these prisoners and ensure they return to custody.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by the prison system during the pandemic and the subsequent efforts to manage the release and return of prisoners. The authorities are committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals serve their due sentences.
