April 7, 2026 | New Delhi, India: A total of 19 Members of Parliament from across India formally took oath in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, drawing national attention to the composition of the Upper House. Among them were prominent leaders such as Sharad Pawar and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, along with first-time सांसद including Jyoti Waghmare and Ramrao Wadkute.

The oath ceremony was administered by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan in the presence of Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and other senior officials. Of the 19 MPs, five belong to Maharashtra, six to Tamil Nadu, five to West Bengal, and three to Odisha.

From Maharashtra, the members included Sharad Pawar representing the Nationalist Congress Party faction, Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India, BJP leaders Maya Ivnate and Ramrao Wadkute, and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader Jyoti Waghmare. While Pawar took oath in Hindi, the remaining members from the state chose Marathi. The ceremony witnessed a brief moment of interruption when Jyoti Waghmare referenced several revered historical figures, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and B. R. Ambedkar, during her oath. As parliamentary rules prohibit such mentions, the Chair directed her to adhere strictly to the prescribed format, following which she completed the oath again.

Waghmare’s traditional attire and symbolic gestures, including holding the Constitution, drew attention within the House. Meanwhile, leaders like Maya Ivnate and Ramrao Wadkute emphasized their commitment to public service, rural development, and inclusive governance. The induction of these MPs reflects a diverse political representation and sets the stage for upcoming legislative proceedings in Parliament.
