In a shocking incident on Tuesday night in Maharashtra’s Nashik city, a mob turned violent during the demolition of an illegal religious structure, injuring at least 21 police personnel and damaging several vehicles. The incident occurred in the Kathe Galli area during an anti-encroachment drive carried out under orders from the Bombay High Court.

According to the police, the Satpeer Baba Dargah had been declared unauthorized by the court, and trustees had initiated the process of removing the structure. As the demolition began around 11 pm, a large crowd gathered to oppose the action. The situation escalated when the mob began pelting stones at police officials and community leaders who were attempting to pacify the protestors.
The protest grew intense, leading to violent clashes. Police were forced to use mild lathi-charge and teargas shells to disperse the crowd. Despite these efforts, three police vehicles were damaged and five to six others — including two motorbikes — were torched by the rioters. Among the injured were senior officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and a Local Crime Branch (LCB) officer.

The injured personnel were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Nashik Police have arrested 15 individuals involved in the violence, and efforts are underway to identify more culprits through CCTV footage and local intelligence.
Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik stated that the police had successfully dispersed the mob and that strict legal action is being taken against those involved, in accordance with the law. He confirmed that the situation is now under control.
The demolition resumed early Wednesday morning around 6 am with the help of four JCBs, eight dumpers, and seven other vehicles, under tight police security and have completed the task as per court directives. Authorities have reinforced security in the area to prevent any further escalation.
