India|February 23, 2026: India has seen a rise in fake universities over the past few years. According to data released by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the number of such institutions has now reached 32. Delhi leads the list with 12 fake universities, some located just meters from the UGC headquarters.

Uttar Pradesh ranks second with four such institutions. Over the last two years, the number of fake universities nationwide has increased from 20 to 32, prompting UGC to warn students and parents to remain vigilant.
In Maharashtra, two universities Raja Arabi University in Nagpur and the National Backward Class Agricultural University in Solapur have been flagged as fake. These institutions often attempt to appear legitimate by using the names and logos of foreign universities. Recently, Columbia University in the U.S. sent a letter to the UGC complaining that a fake university in Maharashtra was using its name and logo. Following this, the UGC reiterated its warning to students and parents about such fraudulent institutions.
