PMC warns against illegal tree cutting during Dussehra. Violators face fines up to ₹1 lakh. Citizens urged to report violations to the Tree Authority to protect Pune’s greenery.
Pune, October 02, 2025 – With Vijayadashami celebrations around the corner, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a strict advisory warning citizens against the illegal cutting of tree branches during the festival. The notice comes in an effort to protect mango, Shami, Apte, and other trees often harmed during ritual practices.
Festival rituals during Dussehra involve the worship of weapons, vehicles, books, and the exchange of Shami or Apte leaves. While these customs are an integral part of the celebrations, officials have observed a growing trend of trees being cut without proper permission, leading to environmental damage.
Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, along with its 2021 amendment, violators can face fines up to ₹1 lakh. The PMC’s Tree Authority Department will actively monitor reported violations and take necessary action.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant during the festival and avoid cutting branches without approval. Any violations can be reported directly to the PMC’s Tree Authority.
“This initiative is about celebrating our festivals responsibly while protecting Pune’s greenery,” said a PMC official. “We appeal to everyone to follow the rules and ensure that our cultural celebrations do not come at the cost of the environment.”
