IRCTC website crashes before Diwali; passengers unable to book tickets via app
A major technical glitch shut down IRCTC’s ticket booking website and mobile app just before Diwali, leaving thousands of passengers stranded during peak Tatkal hours. Officials are working to restore service.
Mumbai, October 17, 2025: Thousands of railway passengers faced major inconvenience on Thursday as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) ticket booking website and mobile app crashed ahead of Diwali.
According to railway officials, the disruption occurred due to technical issues in the online booking system, halting both website and app-based ticket purchases across the country. The outage was reported around Tatkal booking hours on the eve of Dhantrayodashi, a period of heavy demand as travelers rushed to secure last-minute Diwali tickets.
Several passengers took to social media to complain that neither the IRCTC website nor the mobile app was responding. Some users reported repeated login failures and transaction errors during payment.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In December 2024, the IRCTC website had faced multiple outages during high-traffic periods, leading to similar chaos among passengers.
The latest crash, coming just before one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, has once again raised concerns about system resilience and capacity management at India’s primary railway booking platform.
