The Indian Army may raise Agniveer retention from 25% to 75% under the Agnipath scheme. Decision expected after the Army Commanders Conference, aiming to retain trained personnel and boost morale.
Jaisalmer | October 23, 2025:The Indian Army is reportedly considering a major change to the Agnipath recruitment scheme that would significantly raise the retention rate of Agniveers from the current 25 percent to 75 percent. The proposal is expected to be discussed and potentially approved during the ongoing Army Commanders Conference in Jaisalmer, which runs from October 23 to 24.
Under the Agnipath scheme, young recruits, known as Agniveers, are inducted for a four-year tenure. At present, only a quarter of these soldiers are retained for permanent positions based on performance and merit. With the first batch nearing the end of their service period, army leadership is reviewing whether a higher retention rate would help maintain operational readiness and ensure continuity of trained personnel in the armed forces.

Officials suggest that increasing the retention rate could have several benefits. It would provide greater job security to Agniveers, boost morale among serving personnel, and make military service a more attractive career option for the youth. Additionally, retaining a larger pool of trained soldiers could strengthen the army’s operational capacity, especially in specialized roles that require experience and skill.
The proposal is part of ongoing discussions to fine-tune the Agnipath scheme, which was introduced to modernize recruitment and create a youthful, skilled military force. While no final decision has been announced, it is expected that the conference’s deliberations will provide clarity on whether the retention rate will be revised.
The change, if approved, is likely to have a major impact on the careers of thousands of young soldiers currently serving under the Agnipath scheme.
