Complaints about poor-quality food on Indian Railways are once again making headlines. Passengers have expressed strong dissatisfaction over being served unhygienic and overpriced meals during their train journeys.

Kolhapur|October 31,2025: An investigation conducted on several railway routes has revealed that the food being supplied to passengers is often stale, cold, and prepared in unsanitary conditions. Tea and coffee are being served diluted and tasteless, while packaged food items lack freshness. Shockingly, even bottled water is being sold at inflated prices, raising questions about corruption and negligence in the catering system.

Passengers have alleged that catering contractors are overcharging for meals that are not fit for consumption. A meal priced at ₹100 on the menu is reportedly being sold for ₹150 to ₹200 in some trains, with no proper bill or receipt given. Such irregularities have become common, leaving passengers frustrated and helpless.

Health experts warn that consuming such unhygienic food could lead to serious health issues, especially during long-distance travel. Passengers are now demanding strict action against the vendors responsible and calling for better monitoring of the catering services.

Railway authorities, on their part, have promised an internal review and assured that action will be taken against those found guilty. However, travelers remain skeptical, saying that similar promises have been made in the past with little visible change.

The recurring issue has once again raised a critical question is passenger safety and comfort truly a priority for Indian Railways, or is profit taking precedence over public welfare?
