Did Fake Police Tricks Net ₹1.25 Crore Gold? Navi Mumbai Arrest Raises MCOCA Alarm

Navi Mumbai police arrested Sajjad Irani for posing as a fake cop, seizing ₹1.25 crore worth of gold. He’s now booked under India’s organised-crime law, MCOCA

Navi Mumbai | November 4, 2025: Navi Mumbai police have cracked down on a man accused of impersonating a police officer, leading to the seizure of gold valued at over ₹1.25 crore. The accused, identified as Sajjad Irani, has been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Investigators say Irani deceived citizens by presenting himself as a police official. One such case came to light on July 31, 2025, in Kharghar, where he allegedly stopped a 68-year-old man named Pawankumar Kejriwal while he was buying household goods. Claiming he was a police officer, Irani told Kejriwal that his jewelry needed “safe custody” following an alleged drug-related raid. Kejriwal handed over his gold chains and other items under the misapprehension that he was dealing with law-enforcement.

Following that incident, Navi Mumbai’s Crime Branch probed further. It discovered that Irani has more than 100 registered offenses across various police stations in the state. In Navi Mumbai alone, he admitted to 15 fraud cases in which he impersonated a police official.

As part of their action, police seized 1,186 grams of gold jewelry including necklaces, chains, bangles, and rings from Irani’s wife. They also recovered fake ID cards resembling police credentials, fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, and the motorcycle used in the fraud.

Authorities say the haul is valued at ₹1,25,10,686. The seizure and arrest followed about 20–25 days of reviewing CCTV footage and tracking his movements.

Irani is now under MCOCA, signalling that police believe his operations were not isolated frauds but part of organised criminal activity. The case raises fresh concerns about impersonation crimes and system-level loopholes that allow such brazen scams.
