A 17-year-old was brutally killed on Bajirao Road in Pune in full public view; three minors have been arrested and police probe links the act to an old enmity.
Pune | November 5, 2025: In a chilling incident of street violence, a 17-year-old boy was fatally attacked and killed near Maharana Pratap Garden on Bajirao Road in Pune around 3 pm on Tuesday. Police say the victim was riding a two-wheeler with a friend when three masked assailants approached on another motorcycle and launched a brutal attack with sharp weapons, including a kukri and billhooks.
The deceased has been identified as Mayank Somdatt Kharare of Sane Guruji Nagar in the Ambil Odha Vasahat area, and his companion, reportedly 18, sustained serious injuries in the assault. According to police, all three accused have been detained and are juveniles, as are the deceased and his friend.
Investigations reveal that the attack stems from an old rivalry between the deceased and the main accused. Officials say both parties come from the same neighbourhood in the Vasahat area of Parvati, and a case had been registered earlier in July where the roles of complainant and accused were reversed.
The incident has rattled residents and raised serious concerns over public safety and the rise of juvenile violence in the city. Being committed in broad daylight on a busy road, the attack has put pressure on policing and youth-crime prevention efforts. Senior officers from the local police station and crime branch are investigating, and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered.
This brutal murder on a public thoroughfare underscores the urgent need for enhanced juvenile crime intervention and community-based conflict resolution in urban areas. With the accused being minors, questions of accountability, rehabilitation and the future of youth crime prevention are brought into sharp focus.
