A lorry belonging to a group of pilgrims on Kartiki Ekadashi struck warkaris on the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway’s Kam­shet Ghat section early Tuesday. Two died instantly; eight others were critically injured.


Pune | November 11, 2025 : On the morning of November 11, heartbreak struck a group of warkaris participating in the Kartiki Ekadashi pilgrimage when their vehicle was hit by an out-of-control container truck on the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway at the Kamshet Ghat section. According to sources, the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. as the pilgrims were ascending. The truck lost control and rammed directly into their vehicle, killing two warkaris on the spot and seriously injuring eight more.

The victims belonged to a procession led by Shri Dawaji Patil from Uran. They were en route to Alandi when the tragedy occurred. Local residents and highway patrol quickly rushed to the scene and organized the rescue operation; the injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

This is not the first such mishap at this location. The ghat-section is noted for steep gradients, heavy traffic and a history of accidents earlier incidents had prompted pilgrims to demand better safety measures and road signage. Locals now question whether sufficient safeguards are in place for large pilgrim groups using the old highway.

Pune Rural police are investigating the crash, reviewing the truck driver’s logs, vehicle condition, and road safety infrastructure at the site. They are also pressing for tighter coordination between authorities and pilgrimage organisers for safer travel.
