Captain Shubman Gill says India’s playing XI for the Eden Gardens Test is nearly final, with a key decision between an extra seamer or spinner hinging on morning pitch assessment.
Kolkata | November 14, 2025: India captain Shubman Gill confirmed that his squad is almost set for the first Test against South Africa national cricket team, which begins at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. However, he highlighted a pivotal tactical decision that remains: whether to field an extra seamer or an additional spinner.
Gill emphasised that the choice will depend closely on pitch and weather conditions when they inspect the wicket on match morning. “There is always this conflict of whether we go with an extra seamer or a spinner. We will assess the surface and then finalise,” he said.
Although spinners traditionally dominate in India, Gill stressed that pacers could play a significant role too—particularly given the nature of the Eden surface, which historically offers some assistance to fast bowlers early on.

In preparation for the match, the Indian squad began training at Eden Gardens, where Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir led an intensive session focusing on conditions, tactics and interplay between batting and bowling units.
Gill also addressed the notable exclusion of veteran seamer Mohammed Shami from the side, calling the decision a difficult one given his calibre.
As India takes on the World Test Champions South Africa in a two‑match series, Gill noted the importance of getting their combinations right early. “We know the challenge ahead won’t be easy,” he said. “It’s vital we select well and adapt to the conditions from day one.”
