Pune| November 15, 2025:When Indian Light Music, or Sugam Sangeet, is discussed, the golden era from 1950 to 1975 immediately comes to mind. This period is widely celebrated for its creativity, melody, and distinctly Indian essence. However, music enthusiasts often overlook the second golden era of Sugam Sangeet, spanning 1988 to 2000, which marked another peak of melodic brilliance across film and non-film music, including Ghazals, Bhaktisangeet, Indipop, and television serial title songs.
This period coincided with a major turning point in India’s socio-cultural evolution, influencing lifestyles, communication, language, and ideology. Yet, despite its significance, the era’s music seems forgotten, with few concerts or events dedicated to preserving this heritage.
Dr. Salil Latay from Pune, a singer and pianist specializing in Hindustani classical melodies. Driven by a passion to conserve and propagate this “Melodious 90s” legacy, he created Sukoon Bhare Nagme, a unique concert format celebrating the era. Using a Vocal Sonata style just his voice accompanied by piano or synthesizer Dr. Latay delivers solo performances across diverse venues, from intimate living rooms to open-air grounds.
The concerts are designed to resonate with multiple generations: Gen X, who lived through the 1990s; Gen Y, reliving their formative years; and Gen Z, discovering the rich musical heritage of their parents’ era. Through his performances, Dr. Latay aims not only to evoke nostalgia but also to ensure the music of the 1990s remains alive in public memory.
By highlighting this era’s creativity and melodic depth, Dr. Latay is safeguarding a vital cultural heritage. His work underscores the urgency of recognizing and celebrating the second golden period of India’s Sugam Sangeet before it fades into oblivion.
