Sindhudurg Motor Accident Tribunal orders seizure of SP Sindhudurg’s office furniture after non-payment of ₹7.54 lakh compensation to victim; warrant to follow if payment not made by November 15.
Sindhudurg, November 15, 2025: In a landmark order, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Sindhudurg, has directed the seizure of office furniture, including chairs and tables, from the Superintendent of Police (SP) Sindhudurg’s office for failing to pay compensation to a 2016 accident victim. The tribunal has warned that a seizure warrant will be issued if the amount is not cleared by November 15.
The case dates back to a serious accident near Moti Talav in Sawantwadi in 2016, involving a police Bolero jeep and a motorcycle carrying Vijay Bapu Wengurlekar. Wengurlekar, a resident of Tendoli-Kudal, sustained critical injuries and became permanently disabled, confined to bed. Following the accident, evidence at the site, such as bloodstains and tire marks, was washed away, causing public outrage over the actions of the police jeep driver, Prashant Dhumal.
Wengurlekar filed a claim for compensation at the Sindhudurg Motor Accident Tribunal. The tribunal ordered the insurance company, the jeep owner, and the SP Sindhudurg to jointly pay ₹14,97,270. While the insurance company paid nearly half the amount, no payment was received from the SP’s office despite receiving notices.
In response, Tribunal President H. B. Gaikwad ordered the seizure of office furniture from the SP’s office to recover ₹7,54,351 owed by the police department. Legal representatives of Vijay Wengurlekar confirmed that if the compensation is not deposited by November 15, a formal seizure warrant will be issued.
Advocate Deepak Andhari, representing Wengurlekar, emphasized that the tribunal’s decision underscores the importance of compliance by public officials in ensuring justice for accident victims. The case highlights accountability measures for government authorities failing to fulfill compensation obligations.
This decisive action aims to ensure that the victim receives timely compensation and sends a strong message about adherence to legal mandates by government departments.
