Heavy Traffic Jam Reported Near Khandala Ghat on Pune–Mumbai Expressway
Traffic on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway came to a near standstill around Khandala Ghat on Saturday, with long queues and hour-long delays caused by weekend rush and road repair work.
Pune | November15 ,2025: Lonavala is facing significant traffic disruption on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway, particularly around the Khandala Ghat section, as vehicles remained stuck for over an hour on Saturday. Commuters reported that both lanes were heavily congested around 11 a.m., slowing to a crawl and leaving motorists stranded.
Highway police officers were deployed to manage the buildup and ease the flow of traffic. Authorities confirmed that the congestion was mainly due to a surge in weekend travel as well as ongoing repair work in the ghat stretch.
The traffic jam is not new to this section. Khandala, a natural bottleneck, has a history of gridlocks during peak holiday periods. Critics argue that lane discipline, infrastructure constraints, and increasing tourist traffic exacerbate the problem, especially when heavy vehicles dominate the narrow ghat lanes.
For now, the highway police continue their efforts to clear the backlog, but commuters have been advised to plan ahead, as delays are expected to persist, especially during weekend rush hours.
