At the Sixth National Water Awards 2024, Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, Varanasi, and Jalaun districts were recognized for outstanding water conservation efforts, with each receiving top honors and significant cash prizes

Lucknow / Varanasi | November 20, 2025:- In the Sixth National Water Awards 2024, three districts from Uttar Pradesh Mirzapur, Varanasi, and Jalaun secured the top three positions in the Northern Zone, reinforcing the state’s growing leadership in water conservation

Mirzapur was declared the best district in the Northern Zone, thanks to its strong implementation of water-management initiatives. The district has successfully promoted rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and community-based water projects under schemes like the Jal Jeevan Mission and Atal Bhujal Yojana

Varanasi secured second place in the same category, earning recognition for its large-scale water conservation efforts. According to eSakal, the district has implemented over 25,000 water-conserving structures, revived traditional water sources, and engaged communities in sustainable water-use practices.Varanasi reportedly received a ₹2 crore award for its performance.

Jalaun, meanwhile, came in third. Its District Magistrate, Rajesh Kumar Pandey, was honored for leading effective rainwater harvesting models and checking-ground recharge efforts in the drought-prone region.

Across the awards, UP’s success reflects a broader push by the state government and local administrations toward sustainable water management. The Ministry of Jal Shakti, which oversees the National Water Awards, highlighted these district-level wins as exemplary models for community participation.

In a related development, Maharashtra was declared the best state this year at the same awards.This recognition adds momentum to national efforts to scale up water conservation across different regions.
