India’s four new labour codes, effective from November 21, broaden protection for women and gig workers by guaranteeing social security, maternity benefits, equal pay, and legal recognition of platform work.
New Delhi | November 22, 2025: Starting November 21, four new labour codes officially came into force across India, bringing sweeping reforms that significantly benefit women and gig (platform) workers.
Under the revised Social Security Code, gig and platform workers such as delivery agents, ride-hailing drivers, and freelancers are now legally recognised and enrolled in social security schemes. Aggregators are required to pay into a welfare fund, which will finance benefits including health insurance, disability cover, life insurance and old age protection
For women workers, the new regulations bring stronger rights and protections. The laws mandate equal pay for equal work, outlaw gender-based discrimination, and allow women to work night shifts provided safety protocols are in place and their consent is obtained. Maternity benefits have been enhanced too: women are now eligible for up to 26 weeks of paid leave.
Other important provisions support women in the workplace. For instance, establishments with 50 or more employees must now have crèche facilities.Women returning after maternity leave will also be allowed two nursing breaks daily until their child reaches 15 months of age.
These reforms intend to modernise labour laws by integrating gig work into the formal protection framework, while also enhancing workplace equality and safety for women. Experts say that though implementation will be a challenge, these measures represent one of the most progressive labour reforms in recent decades.
