Pune | November 22, 2025: To curb rising accidents on the Pune–Bengaluru National Highway, senior officials from the Pune Regional Transport Office carried out a surprise inspection drive on Friday at two accident-prone points  Navale Bridge and Khed-Shivapur toll plaza. The operation focused on enforcing traffic rules, identifying risky driving patterns and ensuring better compliance among motorists.

During the special drive, enforcement teams took action against 151 vehicles for violations such as driving without insurance, operating vehicles with expired licences, talking on the phone while driving, missing reflectors, helmet violations, entering no-entry zones, illegal parking and lane cutting. Officers also checked 250 vehicles and counselled 120 drivers on safe driving practices, highlighting the causes of frequent accidents on the stretch.

Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad personally visited the IRB office at the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza to review accident-prone spots and guide the enforcement teams. She was accompanied by Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosale and Assistant RTO Yuvraj Patil. The officials inspected the highway, reviewed previous accident sites and instructed field teams on measures required to improve safety.

The crackdown followed a detailed report published a day earlier highlighting reckless driving on the Navale Bridge section. Taking note of the concerns, RTO officials intensified action and deployed two dedicated Vayuveg squads to monitor the area. These teams have been tasked with sustained enforcement to deter speeding, wrong-lane driving and other violations.

Motor vehicle inspectors Krushnat Bamnikar, Atul Darade and Vasant Kalambkar played key roles in the field operations, ensuring comprehensive checks across vehicles and drivers.

The RTO has stated that similar drives will continue throughout the coming weeks to ensure discipline among motorists and reduce the rising number of highway accidents.
