CM Mohan Yadav announces that following a police officer’s martyrdom, the state government will provide ₹1 crore to his family and a direct Assistant Sub-Inspector appointment to his younger brother ahead of upcoming municipal elections
Bhopal (MP)| 26 November 2025: The state government today announced a special compassionate appointment for the younger brother of a “martyred” police officer killed in anti‑Naxal operations. The officer, identified as Ashish Sharma, was killed during duty and his family will receive ₹1 crore in financial aid. As part of this package, his younger brother, Ankit Sharma, will be directly appointed as an Assistant‑Sub‑Inspector (ASI).

The decision comes in the wake of a new amendment restoring “direct municipal elections,” announced by the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Under the revised law, certain positions may now be filled through compassionate or direct recruitment mechanisms, especially for families of officers who died in the line of duty.

The state government has defended the move as a gesture to honour sacrifice and ensure that bereaved families get social security and employment support. The aid ₹1 crore is meant to help meet immediate financial needs arising from the tragedy, while the ASI appointment provides long-term livelihood support.
However, such direct appointments have historically sparked debate. Critics argue that compassionate recruitment should be transparent and merit-based, and that appointments tied to municipal‑election regulations must avoid politicisation. Supporters say this acknowledges the sacrifices made by police personnel and helps families survive after loss.

As Ankit Sharma prepares to assume the ASI role, many await official orders and postings. Meanwhile, the government has urged police departments and municipal bodies to implement similar support for other affected families.
