Mumbai’s air quality worsens as AQI levels rise, causing respiratory issues, fatigue, and irritation. Experts warn pollution from traffic, construction, and industry could make this winter particularly hazardous

Mumbai | 28 November 2025: Mumbai has been grappling with rising air pollution over the past week, with several areas shifting from moderate to poor or worse AQI levels in a short span of time. Residents report frequent coughing, sore throats, irritation, fatigue, and other respiratory symptoms as the city’s hazy skies and smoggy mornings intensify.

The main contributors to this deteriorating air quality are vehicular emissions, dust from ongoing construction, industrial pollutants, and stagnant weather conditions with low wind speeds, which prevent the dispersion of particulate matter. On the worst days, PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations reach dangerous thresholds, particularly affecting children, elderly residents, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Healthcare providers note an increasing number of patients presenting with coughs, sinus pressure, breathlessness, and fever-like symptoms. Many link their discomfort to prolonged exposure during long commutes or time spent in dust-heavy city corridors. Doctors advise citizens to reduce outdoor activities during high AQI periods, wear protective masks, and ensure proper indoor air filtration wherever possible.

Urban planners and environmentalists have stressed the need for stricter dust-control measures, regulated construction schedules, and more robust monitoring of industrial emissions to prevent further deterioration. Without urgent interventions, Mumbai could experience one of its toughest winter pollution phases in recent years.

Authorities have urged the public to stay informed about daily AQI updates and follow health advisories diligently, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable groups in the city.
