Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has sharply criticised the confusion around local body elections, accusing the state government of influencing the process, weakening constitutional rights and damaging public trust in democracy.

Mumbai|December 3, 2025: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has strongly criticised the confusion surrounding the ongoing local body elections in Maharashtra. He said the current situation is weakening people’s faith in the electoral process and accused the government of creating space for interference during the 15–16 days when ballot godowns remain under custody.

Chavan argued that the government is trampling on the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments, which protect the functioning of local self-governance. He warned that when democratic systems weaken, the door opens for authoritarian practices. Calling the postponement of results a complete failure of the administration, he said the responsibility lies entirely with the government.

The controversy intensified after the Election Commission postponed the mayor and corporator elections in several municipalities just a day before voting. Chavan said the decision has disrupted the entire election cycle and created unnecessary political tension. He alleged that the state has effectively been run by bureaucracy for the past five years and claimed the postponement of 20 municipal elections was not coincidental. He further alleged that the Commission was functioning under pressure from the BJP.

Even if leaders protest or Rahul Gandhi raises his voice, he said, the situation is unlikely to change unless the government stops interfering.

Chavan also made a striking remark during a recent press conference, where he suggested the possibility of a Marathi leader becoming the next Prime Minister of India. Referring to global political unrest linked to the Epstein files in the United States, he claimed that international disclosures could influence Indian politics as well. He noted that documents related to former US President Donald Trump could trigger major political shifts, adding that he was only highlighting a possibility, and people were free to interpret his statement as they wish.
