MMRDA Begins Work On 6-Lane Elevated Freeway To Ease Eastern Express Highway Congestion
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started constructing a 13.9 km elevated, six-lane corridor to decongest the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), promising a South Mumbai–Thane commute in 25–30 minutes.
Pune | December 4, 2025: The MMRDA has officially commenced work on the 13.9-kilometre fully elevated extension of the city’s freeway network, aiming to relieve heavy congestion along the Eastern Express Highway. The new corridor will link Anand Nagar in Thane to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, passing through key nodes such as Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg and Mankhurd.
Engineers say this six-lane (3 + 3) high-speed link is designed to slash travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to just 25–30 minutes. The construction uses a “single-pile, single-pier” design — a first for an elevated road in the Mumbai region — featuring 2.5-metre monopiles and 40-metre spans topped with a 25-metre-wide superstructure. Entry and exit ramps will be provided at Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction and Vikhroli Junction, along with a 3+3 lane toll plaza near the Navghar Flyover to manage traffic flow efficiently.
To offset environmental concerns, the alignment between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar has been revised to save 127 mature Pink Trumpet trees. Additionally, MMRDA plans to plant over 4,175 trees in the surrounding areas as part of its compensatory green drive.
Preliminary survey work and test piling have already been completed. Geotechnical investigations are almost done and pier construction is underway. Officials emphasise that the project is key to unclogging one of the city’s busiest arterial routes, improving commute efficiency across multiple suburbs, reducing vehicular emissions from idling traffic and supporting broader regional connectivity — including a link with the Samruddhi Expressway via the Anand Nagar–Saket elevated road.
