PMP will add 1,000 new buses soon and plans 8–10 additional depots, including e-depots and CNG depots, mainly in PMRDA and PCMC areas to boost regional bus frequency.

Pune | December 04,2025:Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal (PMP) is preparing for a major expansion of its public transport network, with plans to add nearly a thousand new buses over the next few months. To manage this increased fleet, PMP has decided to set up eight to ten new bus depots. Of these, four to five will function as e-depots while the rest will cater to CNG buses. Most of the new facilities are expected to come up in the PMRDA and PCMC areas, where demand for public transport services is steadily rising.

PMP currently serves Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the surrounding PMRDA region. Passenger numbers have grown sharply in recent years, but the bus strength has not kept pace, leading to overcrowding and long waiting times. To address this, both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have initiated a tender process to purchase 1,000 buses using PMRDA funds. Work orders have already been issued to two companies, and two buses have been delivered to PMP as the first batch of the procurement.

Additionally, PMP has received approval for another 1,000 buses under the central government’s PM e-drive scheme, which will further strengthen electric mobility in the region.

At present, PMP operates 17 depots from where around 1,800 buses are deployed daily. With a large fleet expansion on the way, the corporation has sought 125 acres of land from both municipal bodies and the PMRDA to set up new depots. Some parcels have already been allotted, and construction will begin after handover. The planned depots are expected to increase connectivity across the PMRDA region, with more routes extending outside Pune city.

According to officials, the entry of new buses and additional depots will ensure better frequency, wider coverage, and a more reliable public transport network for the metropolitan region.
